You’ll find deep wooded valleys, stormy seas, and cliff-top cliffs, but above all people who can tell old stories and sing folk songs. Lahemaa, the oldest national park in the former Soviet Union, is the flagship of Estonian nature. The 725 km2 area is home to lush native forests, wetlands stretching to the horizon and beaches both rocky and sandy. Lahemaa is one of Europe’s most important forest protected areas and home to Europe’s largest collection of boulders. It is home to a wide range of wild animals – elk, wild boars, bears and lynx. The northern coast attracts many migratory birds every year. Several well-marked long hiking trails run through the national park, such as the RMK Oandu-Ikla hiking trail and the forest trail under the European International Hiking Trail E11.

Lahemaa is also a place with a rich cultural heritage. The 71 villages of the national park, with over 3,000 inhabitants, form a vibrant community with a lively folk culture and a welcoming, active spirit. The surrounding area boasts several interesting manors, the largest collection of Estonian art, a maritime museum, and various smaller museums worth visiting. For military history enthusiasts, there are fascinating Soviet-era border guard facilities. More and more small ports in Northern Estonia are ready to welcome visitors. Cultural life is especially vibrant in summer, when numerous traditional outdoor events take place.

Since 1971, when Lahemaa National Park was established, organizations and the local community have collaborated to preserve the values of this magical place. Lahemaa has received the internationally recognized quality label for sustainable tourism, namely the EUROPARC certificate and the Green Destinations Platinum Award.

Lahemaa is a magical little place where nature and people live in harmony.
