The westernmost of Lahemaa’s four peninsulas is named after its oldest village at the tip \u2013 Juminda, which is associated with several legends. Today, Juminda Peninsula is famous across Estonia for its active community \u2013 led by locals, there are the Leesi village shop, community center, and volunteer sea rescue services. At the same time, the heritage of the coastal people has been preserved here, and local history is valued.<\/p>

  • Once, the Juminda Peninsula spoke a coastal language known as pohiranna, which resembled Finnish and reflected close ties across the bay.<\/li>
  • On Hara Island, there was once a sprat processing industry that employed over 300 people.<\/li>
  • During the Soviet era, a rocket base and a submarine demagnetization base were located on Juminda Peninsula and in Hara harbor.<\/li>
  • Near Juminda Cape, one of the world’s deadliest naval battles took place in 1941.<\/li>

    What to Do on Juminda Peninsula?<\/h2>

    The best way to explore Juminda Peninsula is to do so leisurely, stopping in small villages and enjoying both nature and local flavors.<\/p>

    • Start at Leesi village.<\/strong> Drop by the historic village shop, take a nice coffee break, and visit the church and cemetery.<\/li>
    • Visit Hara harbor.<\/strong> Learn about the area’s fascinating history, go for a boat ride, or enjoy a meal at the harbor restaurant.<\/li>
    • Hike to Majakivi.<\/strong> A seven-kilometer educational trail leads to Estonia’s third-largest erratic boulder and a viewing tower. There is also an RMK camping area in Juminda.<\/li>

First, step into the village shop \u2013 that’s where locals meet and you hear the freshest village news. Then walk to the church and cemetery, and visit the Virve Coastal Museum. Finally, head to Hara harbor, where you can get acquainted with the story of Tallinn sprats, Soviet military heritage, and today’s coastal village all in one day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Strange tales are still told about the old sprat industry \u2013 moving stove rings and inexplicable sounds. Whether to believe them or not is up to each individual, but they certainly make the place more intriguing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

      Syrli Gutmann:<\/b> \u201cDuring the Soviet era, the entire peninsula was in a closed border zone. One of the locals’ favorite stories tells of how border guards spotted a suspicious object in the sea and mistook it for a submarine periscope. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a moose. The order was still an order \u2013 the moose was captured, taken to Juminda’s horse barn, and kept there for a week until it finally managed to escape.\u201d<\/i><\/p>

      Today’s Juminda Peninsula<\/h2>

      Juminda Peninsula has ten villages: Pudisoo, Pedaspea, Kolga-Aabla, Kiiu-Aabla, Leesi, Tammistu, Juminda, Tapurla, Virve, and Hara. Approximately 450 people live here.<\/p>

      In 2026, the villages of Hara and Virve will celebrate their 440th anniversary. Several concerts and events will take place in the courtyard of Leesi shop, at Virve village square, and in Hara harbor during the summer.<\/p>

      If you want to get to know Juminda Peninsula more thoroughly, take a local guide who knows the area’s history, nature, and people and can show you places that you might easily miss while just passing by.<\/p>
