Vainupea is a village located in Haljala Parish, Lääne-Viru County, on a cape of the same name. It is situated at the mouth of the Vainupea River, on the eastern border of Lahemaa National Park. To the east, south, and west, the village is bordered by pine and mixed forests; to the north, by the sea. Vainupea village is part of the Karepa region.
The village includes Vaindloo Island, known as a stopping place for fishermen and seal hunters, and the northernmost point of the Republic of Estonia. Vainupea beach is first mentioned in 1499 as belonging to Karula Manor, and a year later in connection with a Harju-Viru court session. The village belonged to Haljala church parish.
