Lahemaa Stone Ring

Lahemaa is a land of coal. It is home to at least 20 coal seams (over 10 metres in diameter or
over 25 metres in circumference), more than anywhere else in Europe. In Estonia, the study of boulders
was started at the end of the 19th century by Helmersen, Director of the Russian Geological Committee, who, together with the Baron of Palma
visited Lahemaa to map the boulders. One way to discover Lahemaa is to take a tour of it by visiting

1. The lighthouse stone on the Juminda peninsula is the third largest boulder in Estonia. There is a 7 km long educational trail leading to it, which
also has an observation tower.
2. Mardimiku stone on the edge of the town of Loksa, on the banks of the Valgejõe, is named after a nearby farm.
3. Mustkivi, located opposite the Viinistu Art Museum on the seashore, is a tite stone from behind which, according to
tradition, the children of the village originate.
4.The Jaani-Tooma stone in the village of Kasispea has been one of the symbols of the Lahemaa National Park and the most
famous hibernaculum in Estonia.
5. Two of the large stones in Tammispea are the size of a hibernaculum. The largest of them claims the title of Estonia’s
tallest cairn.
6. Käsmu Rock Cave, probably the largest in the world, is located in the forest along the hiking trail. It is also worthwhile to walk
to the Vana-Jüri stones in Käsmu, which offer a beautiful view of Saartneeme.
7. A 2.5 km hiking trail leads to Ojakivi in the forest near Võsu village. Ojakivi is the 3rd largest in Lahemaa and the 14th largest in Estonia in terms of volume

8. Altja Großkivi near the net cages is the tithe stone of the village of Altja. All the children of the village were brought from behind it.
If one of the children wanted a sister or a brother, they had to go and knock on the stone, and their wish would come true.
9. The Kaarna stone, which is associated with many legends and love stories, is located in the village of Vainupea
on the seashore. The Kaarna Stone is the source of life-giving water and the passage to the underground air that begins beneath it.
10. The Wax Stone is a charcoal stone in Palmse with many names and many legends.
