Lahemaa’s success story illustrates how Soviet-era military facilities have been transformed
into sustainable tourism destinations. Under the leadership of private entrepreneurs, several
landmarks from the occupation period have gained new meaning and positive image as
visitor attractions.
These sites today offer opportunities for tourists, local residents, and youth,
highlighting Lahemaa’s multifaceted history and providing new cultural and educational opportunities.
One of the most notable examples is the Hara Submarine Base, which has become
a unique tourism destination and a platform for events, installations, and
creative projects. Another good example is the former military barracks in Suurpea, where visitors can learn about its fascinating history with the help of a local guide.
Lahemaa’s Success Stories in the Sustainable Tourism Top 100 List
Lahemaa has been included in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list five times.
Over the years, Lahemaa’s stories have addressed various themes and
solutions related to sustainable tourism.
Lahemaa’s success stories have been diverse – from creatively celebrating European Protected Areas Day
under pandemic conditions and directing visitors, to training local guides,
developing bike rentals, and promoting public transport use
when visiting the national park.
These stories demonstrate how Lahemaa develops tourism in a way that helps preserve nature, support
the community, and provide visitors with sustainable experiences.
Lahemaa’s Sustainable Tourism on an International Level
Lahemaa is one of Estonia’s most important sustainable tourism destinations. According to Kaisa Linno, the head of the Lahemaa Tourism Association, this is a significant recognition for the entire region.
“We have participated in the TOP100 success stories competition five times and have made it to the top 100 each time. This time we reached the finals for the first time and achieved third place. This is a very great recognition and shows that Lahemaa’s military heritage is worth promoting. It was interesting to see that all three top spots in the culture and traditions category were related to the sea.
The preservation of Indian boat building and the fishing traditions of Peru are both remarkable stories, and we had no regrets losing to them.”
The international recognition from the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards confirms
that Lahemaa National Park remains one of Estonia’s most prominent sustainable tourism destinations.
Since 2023, Lahemaa has held the Green Destinations platinum award.
