Hiking trails

The best way to explore the nature of Lahemaa is to find enough time and comfortable hiking equipment and take on the discovery of the local hiking and study trails. The hiking trails in Lahemaa have varying difficulty levels and are diverse – there are hour-long bog trails, a 45 km Oandu-Ikla hiking trail, and even a rocky kilometer to the northernmost point of mainland Estonia, Purekkari Peninsula. The forests of the Käsmu peninsula invite you to explore on foot or by bike. Lahemaa is also crossed by the long-distance hiking trail E11, which is called the Forest Hiking Trail in the Baltic States and starts in the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands and ends in Tallinn.

We also recommend bringing a guide with you on the hiking trails in Lahemaa, whom you can find here.

When going into nature, always make sure that the burden you bring with you is limited to your presence. Sort packaging and used napkins according to waste management rules. Keep the hiking trails in Lahemaa clean!

The park with large ancient trees is an inseparable part of the manor. Sagadi Park has the thickest European white elm and 33 m oaks, which are some of the tallest in Estonia.

In 1985, a 5.1 hectare dendropark was built on the western side of the manor complex. Alien tree and shrub species have been planted in families, all species have been marked with labels, and there are information stands for those interested. A total of 120 species have been planted in the dendropark.

The hike starts in Vainupea, which was a popular summer resort as early as during the tsarist era, by the romantic Vainupea Chapel located right next to the sea. We will walk along the coast right on the beach and have a small break with a picnic in Mustoja (bring your own sandwiches). We will cross the suspension bridge in Mustoja and continue with our hike.

The hike ends in the coastal village of Altja, which has a colourful history and has been restored to its former glory by the Lahemaa National Park. Altja is also known for its boathouses and tavern, which offers traditional meals of Estonian coastal people. There is also a village swing and a bonfire site for celebrating St John's Day.

Larger groups (more than 20 people) will have two guides.

In 2014, we opened a wheelchair path in a historic 16th-century forest park. On the wheelchair path, you can explore the forest, where there are many rarities such as a 200-year-old birch and a rowan over 40 cm in diameter.

The path provides physical activity, new knowledge about species, and a positive state of mind. The tour is guided.

It is known to be the first such trail built on a heritage site.

If you enjoy a healthy lifestyle, beautiful nature, and refreshing water, you will surely find that we have the best recreation options for you.

We offer 1- and 2-day canoe hikes on River Valgejõgi.
After spending the day in the wild, you can enjoy a relaxing sauna. In the summer, you can spend the night in a tent or a barn and sleep on hay. Our Õnnela Guest House, however, is open all year round.

Good to know: Linnumäe Nature Farm is a cotter's hut located on the edge of the Ohepalu bog. Eight generations have lived there and there is still no electricity. The hut is the starting point of the hikes and a perfect location for a sauna.

If you want to go on the hike on your own, you can ask for maps from Ohepalu. If you wish to prepare for your trip more thoroughly, you can decide on the route beforehand and even order signposts to be installed on the crossroads.

On the route, you can see faraway forgotten and abandoned villages, known and unknown manors, and the eskers and small lakes of Kõrvemaa, which are all inaccessible by car.

If you wish, our guide can come with you on the hike. After a day in the nature, we offer you a relaxing sauna.

Good to know: Linnumäe Nature Farm is a cotter's hut located on the edge of the Ohepalu bog. Eight generations have lived there and there is still no electricity. The hut is the starting point of the hikes and a perfect location for a sauna.

In Ohepalu bog, you can go on a snowshoe hike and pick a different route each time. Once you go a bit further, the bogs of Kõrvemaa will soon be in the walking distance as well.

Linnumäe Nature Farm has eight pairs of snowshoes for rent. You can go on a hike on your own or ask a guide to come with you, however you like. Our hiking trails are free for all!

Puhta vee teemapark or Clean Water Theme Park is a science park that concentrates on topics related to clean water; here, you find answers to questions, such as how clean groundwater is generated, how life depends on clean water, or what alters the quality of water.

The theme park and its office are located on Pandivere uplands, on the area in Pandivere and Adavere-Põltsamaa that is sensitive to nitrates.

The theme park conveys the message of psychologist Tõnu Ots: 'The Creator hid all of the world's wisdom in the nature – our wisdom is to find it.'

The price for a programme instructor's services is 54 euros per hour (in case of groups of more than 20 people, two instructors are required, and accordingly, the price is 108 euros per hour).

Lahemaa Hiking Centre, located in Loobu village, was established to promote  a nature-friendly lifestyle and spending time in the nature.
The canoe hike takes place on River Valgejõgi, one of the most beautiful rivers in northern Estonia. The hike lasts 3–5 hours, depending on your wishes. On the river, we might see waterfowl, grey herons, or beaver hills and their traces. If we are lucky, we might see other wild animals on the shores, as well.
All participants will be given a canoe, a life jacket, and a paddle. Instruction will take place on the spot. After the canoe hike, you can spend some lovely time in the cosy fireplace hall and sauna in Hääde Mõtete Maja (House of Good Thoughts) or talk to your friends while sitting next to a campfire.
Come and put yourself and others to the test!

The tower is located in Vihasoo coastal meadow, the most bird-populated area of Lahemaa National Park. There, you will see the islands of the Gulf of Eru, which are the nesting area for 26 species of birds and a stopping place for migratory birds.
The tower, which is 7 m high and approximately 4 m from the ground, holds a few dozen people at a time. Information boards introduce the birds of the islands and the Gulf of Eru, and the protected European white elm next to the road.
The tower is located in an area surrounded by an electric fence which is meant for a beef cattle. The tower can be accessed via a corner of the fence, where the cattle cannot fit through.
There is a permanent exhibition of bird pictures in the observation tower.

Have you spent a night in the forest, in the middle of trees?
Listened to the sounds of the nocturnal forest – who are those animals?
Sat around the campfire, listening to stories of your friends?

This is a forest camp with a refreshing sauna and it offers an unforgettable experience regardless of the season. The camp is organised in different military tents which can be heated with wood. In the winter, you can go skating or swimming in an ice hole. Each season, however, is perfect for hiking in the Kõnnu Swamp.
It is possible to additionally order a ZIL safari and a snowshoes hike!

The price includes tents, a sauna bus, lighting, firewood, a generator, beds and mattresses, heating at night, and, if possible, an ice hole.

Modern adventure parks and games are nothing new. Life in the countryside, however, has been full of adventures from the beginning.
Come and participate in it at Mikumardi.

A day at Mikumardi rural adventure park includes educational and entertaining activities. We will talk about how and which games did children play in the old times and what jobs did the locals have to do.

You will be able to learn about the history of one of Estonia's oldest farms, hand-milk a cow, ride a zipline into a haystack, practise balancing yourself on milk containers and a horse trolley, tend animals, and participate in seasonal farm work (hay mowing, sheep shearing, ploughing, harvesting, etc.).

A programme by Arma equestrian farm for horse enthusiasts who have acquired the basics of riding (slow trot skills are recommended but we can also use the walking technique).

We will start the day by getting to know the horse, learning about their preparation, and practising with them on the riding ground. We will then go on a horse riding excursion along a nature track by the sea in the beautiful coastal village of Rutja, which is located in the River Selja protected landscape.

We will choose the tempo on the basis of the least experienced rider's skills. If the group can handle it, we will try the walking technique, slow trotting, and galloping.

Come and bring your family or friends and enjoy our cosy holiday house and equestrian farm.

Enjoy the beautiful nature and pick berries and mushrooms. The trail is accessible by bicycle, on skis, or on foot. Once you reach Ohepalu, you can continue your hike to Udriku lakes or even Mõndavere, Viitna, or Lahemaa.

The first 1.5 kilometres of the trail are boggy, but after you cross Valgejõgi River, you will reach the Rutka hills, which run along eskers and are dry. This part of the trail is located in Ohepalu Nature Reserve.

In the autumn of 2018, the first 1.5 km section of the trail was reconstructed from the resources of the Tapa Municipality Government’s 2017 participatory budgeting project.

Rutkaste hiking trail is also called the Tapa–Ohepalu hiking trail.

Mohni Island, in addition to its beautiful nature, attracts visitors with the Mohni lighthouse, which has guided sailors since the ancient times, as well as with the auxiliary buildings of the border guard of the Soviet times, a protected Mohni linden, sand dunes, and rocky mosaics.

Mohni Island used to belong to a monastery. Later, according to a legend, it was a sanctuary for pirates.

Our day starts at Viinistu, where we will board a boat to Mohni. On the island, we will explore the untouched and wonderful nature, follow a guide on a tour of the entire island, and learn about the characteristics, history, and legends of the island.

During the trip, we will explore Juminda or Pärispea peninsula in Lahemaa. Just as the local nature – special, rustic, and tough – the coastal language is also special. We will visit the people speaking the language and walk around the village, on a hiking trail, or another beautiful place.

About 100 people remain who still speak the Kuusalu dialect of this north-eastern coast. As we speak to a person fluent in the coastal language we will learn more about the language and the local life.

My childhood home is located in this neck of the woods. Even though there was no hiking trail in Viru bog at the time, our family often came here to pick berries and mushrooms, and my father for work.

Now, there is a lovely hiking trail where you can explore the bog. There is a foot path leading through a pine forest, a boardwalk in the middle of picturesque bogs, an observation tower, as well as a picnic area near the Kalmeoja parking lot.

Discover all of this with a guide!

Lahemaa Retked offers a nature hike on the Muuksi–Tsitre trails. The area is known for its beautiful nature and rich history. The bank edge offers beautiful views of Kolga Bay and Juminda Peninsula.

Our Lahemaa guide will take you to the Tsitre sandy beach and bird observation tower, a Viking era harbour, the former summer manor lounge of Kolga Manor, the location of the Summer Castle, the ancient park, Muuksi Hill, and the Hundikangrud ancient burial grounds.

There are campfire sites on the seashore where you can have a picnic after the hike. The duration of the trip starts from two hours. The price in Estonian is 50 euros and in a foreign language 60 euros.

Lake Porkuni covers 41.5 hectares. It is divided using barrages into four smaller lakes: Lake Suurjärv also known as the ‘upper lake’; Lake Karujärv, also known as the ‘lower lake’; Lake Aiajärv; and Lake Iiri or the ‘Irish lake’. What makes Porkuni famous is the floating islands of Lake Suurjärv,
which has a diving tower and where you can hire boats. It is also home to the Kaie spring. Folk tales talk of a slave girl named Kaie whose beauty caught the eye of the lord of the manor. But his love for the girl was not reciprocated, and it is said that one day while Kaie was gathering hay by the lake he threw her into the water. Unable to swim, she drowned, and the hay in her apron is said to have formed the lake’s floating islands.

During the trip, we will visit three waterfalls at Lahemaa: The Nõmmeveski waterfall at River Valgejõgi and the ruins of the hydroelectric power station located in the romantic canyon valley; the Joaveski cascade and the former factory which produced cardboard from trees; and the less-known Vasaristi waterfall and the surrounding karst topography.

Additionally, we can visit the Pikakose house museum if you wish.

We will move by car or bus and on foot.
