Hiking Trails

The best way to explore Lahemaa’s nature is to set aside enough time, pack comfortable hiking gear, and embark on discovering the local hiking and nature trails. Lahemaa’s trails vary in difficulty and character – from one-to-two-hour bog loops and the 45 km Oandu-Ikla hiking trail to a rocky kilometer leading to Purekkari Cape, the northernmost tip of mainland Estonia. The forests of Käsmu peninsula invite exploration both on foot and by bike. Lahemaa is also traversed by the E11 long-distance hiking trail, whose Baltic section is known as the Forest Hiking Trail, and which begins in the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands and ends in Tallinn.

For Lahemaa’s hiking trails, we recommend bringing a guide, whom you can find here.

When venturing into nature, always ensure that your impact on the environment is limited to your presence. Sort any packaging and used napkins according to waste management rules. Keep the hiking trails in Lahemaa clean!

Snowshoe hike in the bog with traditional Estonian food

Discover the magical bogs of Estonia on a guided snowshoe hike – it’s a unique adventure starting from Tallinn.

Snowshoes are lightweight frames that attach to your boots. They help you stay on soft, wet ground and allow you to explore places that would otherwise be inaccessible on foot.

On the hike, you will get to know the local wildlife, enjoy views from the viewing tower, and taste mulgipuder, which is included in the UNESCO intangible heritage list. The hike usually takes place in the Kõnnu Suursoo nature reserve in North Kõrvemaa, but the guide will choose the best location according to the season. The selected bog is a 1-1.5 hour drive from Tallinn.

The tour includes round-trip transport from Tallinn and all necessary equipment. We hike 4–5 km, and the entire tour lasts 5–6 hours (including transport). The hike is designed for groups of up to 3 people. By prior arrangement, 4-member private groups can also join the hike. Larger groups can also participate if transport is not required.

Snowshoe hike in Viru bog

With snowshoes, you can reach places in the bog that the boardwalk does not take you to!

The Viru bog is located 50 kilometers from Tallinn. Here you will find a beautiful pine forest, blue bog pools, and a viewing tower. We will explore between the pools and feel the springy moss under our feet. During the season, we will pick berries. The guide will talk about bog plants, animals, local traditions, and why bogs are important ecosystems.

The hike includes: guide service, snowshoes, gaiters, snacks, and drinks. If you want to experience the magic of the bog away from the boardwalk and learn more about the bog, then come on a snowshoe hike with Wanderlust!

Snowshoe hike with a guide in Kõnnu Suursoo

There is a special atmosphere in Kõnnu Suursoo. The lake lying on the giant basin between the ridges has become a bog over millennia, and the light-filled marsh surface is densely dotted with small ponds. A beautiful panoramic view of the fairy-tale landscape adorned with pine bonsais opens up from the observation tower towering in the middle of the marsh near Paukjärv.

The service includes hiking organization, snowshoes, poles, gaiters if necessary, and a hiking guide. At the end of the hike, it is possible to enjoy a picnic in the open air and relax by the campfire.

Snowshoe hike with a guide in North-Kõrvemaa

An experienced guide will take you to explore the North Kõrvemaa bog landscape, which is ideal for snowshoeing in any season. The hilly nature alternates with vast swamps, and from the steep ridges, you can enjoy views of the lakes. During the hike, you will reach the largest bog in the area – Kõnnu Suursoo, characterized by watery hollows and springy hummock fields. In the bog, you can also climb observation towers, which offer wonderful views of the entire bog. In winter, you might spot tracks of wolves, foxes, or wild boars.

The snowshoe hike lasts 2–3 hours, and the distance covered is 2–8 km, depending on your preference and pace. We will meet at the Järvi Pärnjärve camping area, where you will pick up the equipment, and from there, the trek into the car-free nature begins.

If you wish, we can also hike in the dark – bring a headlamp or borrow one from us. If you want even more excitement and fun on the adventure, order a nature bingo as well.

The service includes snowshoe rental and the guide’s service; if needed, we can also find you rubber boots.

Snowshoe hike with a nature guide in Koitjärve bog

Have you ever heard true silence in a bog? A snowshoe hike in Koitjärve bog takes you to views by the pools and to different stages of bog development, where you wouldn’t want to go in regular shoes. Koitjärve bog is a quiet and spacious bog landscape, where the reflections in the pools, sparse pine forests, and open sky create an ideal place for slow wandering and feeling the rhythm of nature.

What will we do on the hike?
• we will move on snowshoes and learn how to walk in the bog in a way that keeps nature as a friend
• we will stop by the pool and explore how bogs form and develop
• we will observe animal tracks and learn to read the “signs” of the bog
• we will examine sphagnum moss and discuss whether peat is a renewable or non-renewable resource
• for the bolder, there is an opportunity to take a quick dip in the pool if conditions allow

Break
We will brew tea on-site and eat – because everything tastes somehow better in the bog.

Who is it suitable for:
families, groups of friends, teams (and polite four-legged companions). The hike is family- and pet-friendly.

You can stay in the camp in the forest or at Niidu cattle farm, where there is a suitable fireplace room, outdoor sauna, and yard area for hikers.
Tsitre tree path and camping area

Lahemaa National Park is home to Tsitre, a historical site. Until the middle of the last century, many buildings of the famous summer manor in Tsitre were still standing, housing a large manor complex – mansions, servant houses, stables, rose gardens, paths, alleys, a bowling alley, bathing houses, and a travel port. Now, time and nature have taken their toll. Currently, a tree trail has been established in the manor park, showcasing the remaining trees. The oldest pines can be up to 300 years old, and the horse chestnuts over 120 years. From the observation tower, one can admire Kolga Bay.

Along the trail, there are also several resting places equipped with benches, tables, grilling areas, and camping spots.

Tülivere sacred oak

The Tülivere sacred oak, protected by nature conservation, is an ancient sacred tree, to which food offerings were made for the assurance of crop and livestock prosperity even less than a hundred years ago. Ancestors also considered the tree trunk a place for settling disputes, from which the oak got its name.

The tree with a Kahara crown is located on a hill, quite near the Tülivere stream. A peculiarity of this sacred tree is the archway-like opening that spreads wide on the trunk. A person can step through the opening almost without bending down. The dim interior of the hollow is about the size of a tiny chamber, where two adults can stand upright.

The oak is located on private land, so it can only be visited during the daytime.

Vainupea beach

If you are looking for a quiet and picturesque place where time stands still and the sea tells its story, then Vainupea beach is just for you. This hidden gem of the Northern Estonia coastline is located in Haljala municipality, on the edge of Lahemaa National Park. Soft sand, clear water, and a captivating view of the rocky coastal boulders create the perfect spot to enjoy a summer day.

At Vainupea beach, you will find amenities that make your vacation even more enjoyable: changing cabins, benches, a boardwalk, trash bins, and dry toilets – everything to ensure your beach day goes smoothly.

Over a century ago, Vainupea was considered a valued holiday destination, and that charm has not faded even today.
