The best way to explore Lahemaa’s nature is to set aside enough time, pack comfortable hiking gear, and embark on discovering the local hiking and nature trails. Lahemaa’s trails vary in difficulty and character – from one-to-two-hour bog loops and the 45 km Oandu-Ikla hiking trail to a rocky kilometer leading to Purekkari Cape, the northernmost tip of mainland Estonia. The forests of Käsmu peninsula invite exploration both on foot and by bike. Lahemaa is also traversed by the E11 long-distance hiking trail, whose Baltic section is known as the Forest Hiking Trail, and which begins in the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands and ends in Tallinn.
For Lahemaa’s hiking trails, we recommend bringing a guide, whom you can find here.
When venturing into nature, always ensure that your impact on the environment is limited to your presence. Sort any packaging and used napkins according to waste management rules. Keep the hiking trails in Lahemaa clean!

Just about a 30-minute drive from Tallinn awaits one of the most pleasant sandy beaches of Kolga Bay – Valkla Beach. Fine light sand and a spacious sea make it an ideal place for swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying a peaceful seaside getaway. Here, there is less hustle and bustle than at large swimming beaches, but everything you need is available: parking, restrooms, and changing cabins.
If you want to make your day more active, try beach volleyball, table tennis, or throw yourself into a hammock. In summer, you can rent a kayak and explore the uninhabited Pedassaare Island, located 1 km away, where you will find fire pits and a sauna house to take a break at your own pace. Prefer stand-up paddling? You can also rent a paddleboard from the beach along with safety equipment.
After the sea breeze and sand between your toes, stop by the Valkla Beach Restaurant or stay longer: the Valkla Recreation Center offers caravan parking and saunas.
Come enjoy the simple summer pleasures of Valkla Beach and let Kolga Bay refresh you!
The Vihasoo birdwatching tower takes you to one of the most bird-rich areas of Lahemaa National Park, where the coastal meadow, sea, and islet landscape create excellent opportunities for observing nature. From the tower, you can see Eru Bay and its islets, which are the nesting grounds for 26 bird species and an important stopover for migratory birds. In spring and autumn, you can observe bird migration here, and in summer, the life of the coastal meadow.
The 7-meter-high tower can accommodate around twenty people at a time, and the observation platform is about 4 meters above ground level. Information boards help you learn more about the birdlife of Eru Bay and the islets, and also introduce the protected buckthorn trees growing along the roadside. In the observation tower, you will find a permanent exhibition of bird images, making your visit exciting even when there are fewer birds to see.
The tower is located in a pasture fenced with electric fencing, where beef cattle roam. Access to the area is through a corner gate, which animals cannot pass through. Come to Vihasoo and enjoy the bird richness of Lahemaa at your own pace!

The Viru bog adventure hike on snowshoes takes you to the bog landscape of Lahemaa National Park in a way that cannot be experienced while walking on the boardwalk – directly into the middle of the puddles, the swaying grass, and the open bog field. Moving on snowshoes makes the bog accessible and provides the opportunity to experience this environment directly, at a slow pace, using all the senses. It is like a soft gym, where every step helps to better understand the uniqueness of the bog.
During the hike, we move on snowshoes through the bog, stop by the pond and the observation tower, and explore how the mire has formed and what stages of development it has gone through. We get acquainted with the adaptations of bog plants, observe animal tracks, and delve into the role of sphagnum moss in the bog ecosystem. We also discuss whether peat is a renewable or non-renewable natural resource and why this topic is important today.
During the hike, we will also take a break, where we will brew tea and have a small snack. In warmer weather, the bolder ones have the opportunity to refresh themselves in the puddle.
The Viru Bog educational trail is one of the most accessible bog trails in Estonia, where you can experience the diverse nature characteristic of Lahemaa National Park.

In the back part of the trail, you will see a former peat field restoration area with explanatory boards. You can also walk the trail in a circular route, which makes the journey 5.5 km long.
The 11 m observation tower located in the middle of the trail offers a wonderful view of the entire bog. A wide boardwalk leads to the tower (1.3 km), which is suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, and the first platform of the tower is accessible without stairs. Beyond that, the boardwalk becomes narrower. The nearby Kalmeoja campfire site offers an opportunity to rest or camp.

If you thought that water “just exists,” then this trip will get your head wet – with knowledge. The Water Wise hike at the source of pure water in Pandivere takes place in Metsamõisa (Järsi village, Tapa municipality) and leads you to the Pandivere uplands and the Pure Water theme park, in the nitrate-sensitive area of Pandivere-Adavere-Põltsamaa, where nature reveals its secret plumbing.
What you will experience:
• Karst in real life – how rock “eats itself empty” and why sinkholes occur.
• Mysterious Äntu spring lakes and springs – water that has come from the earth, not from the tap.
• Big and small water cycles – examples that will stick in your mind.
• A small “wow experiment”: a chemical reaction with limestone.
• Tips on how to keep groundwater clean – simply and humanely.
• Local stories and cultural heritage.
The hike is suitable if you are looking for a nature-guided tour that is humorous, educational, and experiential – for family, friends, work teams, or even school groups.
A guided bike tour takes you to the trail where pure groundwater is born – the very same water used as drinking water in Estonia every day. We will ride through the Pandivere Highlands, characterized by wide views, forests, and nature rich in springs. We will make stops along the way to enjoy the landscape and hear stories about how nature and water are interconnected here.
We will visit the exceptionally clear Äntu lakes, whose colors and transparency amaze even first-time visitors. During the hike, we will also stop for a picnic and enjoy lunch in the cozy Georgi dining room.
The route, approximately 40 km long, is suitable for active riders with moderate fitness levels. If desired, we can enhance the route with detours to springs and lakes. We will bring the bikes ourselves and plan the start time according to your schedule.
Come and experience the nature that provides Estonia with pure drinking water!

Have you ever wondered who walked in the forest at night before you – and what they were doing there? The Wildlife Wisdom hike is a guided adventure where you learn to read the forest’s “correspondence”: tracks, trails, feeding places, burrows, and other activity signs.
We will talk clearly (and with a suitable smile) about how humans have influenced the balance of nature and why and how the population of wildlife is sometimes consciously regulated. You will also get a clear picture of the role of hunters – without moralizing, just the joy of becoming wiser.
We will take a tour in the forest and review trophies – such as antlers, tusks, and skins – to learn to distinguish species and understand what story each find tells.
Suitable for families with children, groups of friends, and work teams. The hike takes place by reservation in Harju County or Lääne-Viru County. Put on comfortable boots and come – the forest “speaks” more than you think.
