Hiking Trails

The best way to explore Lahemaa’s nature is to set aside enough time, pack comfortable hiking gear, and embark on discovering the local hiking and nature trails. Lahemaa’s trails vary in difficulty and character – from one-to-two-hour bog loops and the 45 km Oandu-Ikla hiking trail to a rocky kilometer leading to Purekkari Cape, the northernmost tip of mainland Estonia. The forests of Käsmu peninsula invite exploration both on foot and by bike. Lahemaa is also traversed by the E11 long-distance hiking trail, whose Baltic section is known as the Forest Hiking Trail, and which begins in the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands and ends in Tallinn.

For Lahemaa’s hiking trails, we recommend bringing a guide, whom you can find here.

When venturing into nature, always ensure that your impact on the environment is limited to your presence. Sort any packaging and used napkins according to waste management rules. Keep the hiking trails in Lahemaa clean!

Palmse Nunnery Boulders

You will find the Palmse Nunnery Boulders on the right side of the road behind the walls of Palmse Manor when driving from the direction of Viitna.

This is a group of 14 erratic boulders with a circumferance of more than 10 metres and many smaller boulders that were formed when larger boulders broke apart upon the melting of glacial ice. They have been named after a nunnery that was located on the same site in the 15th century.

According to legend the Almighty turned all the nuns who went to meet with the Devil into stone.

Pedassaare matkarada

Pedassaare matkarada teeb ringi ümber Kolga lahe mitmes mõttes unikaalseima saare põhjaosa kulgedes piki randa. See on Kolga lahe metsaseim ja kõrgeim saar, unikaalne oma järsult sügavaks mineva liivaranna poolest. Rada asub Kolga lahe maastikukaitsealal ja rada läbides kohtad 11 huvipunkti.

Lake Porkuni
Lake Porkuni covers 41.5 hectares. It is divided using barrages into four smaller lakes: Lake Suurjärv also known as the ‘upper lake’; Lake Karujärv, also known as the ‘lower lake’; Lake Aiajärv; and Lake Iiri or the ‘Irish lake’. What makes Porkuni famous is the floating islands of Lake Suurjärv,
which has a diving tower and where you can hire boats. It is also home to the Kaie spring. Folk tales talk of a slave girl named Kaie whose beauty caught the eye of the lord of the manor. But his love for the girl was not reciprocated, and it is said that one day while Kaie was gathering hay by the lake he threw her into the water. Unable to swim, she drowned, and the hay in her apron is said to have formed the lake’s floating islands.
Clean Water Theme Park trip "Adventure in Nature" with a nature guide

The adventure trip “In the Nature of Hakkamasaaja” is for you if you want real skills, not just “I watched it on YouTube.” It’s pleasantly humorous, practical, and a bit adventurous – just the right amount of “real life” without excessive drama.

What do you actually do and learn?

  • Build a shelter from branches with your team (yes, it really stands!)
  • Light a fire safely (the forest is not a barbecue area – we do it wisely)
  • Brew delicious herbal tea from forest plants
  • If desired, prepare soup over the fire
  • Practice how to act if you are lost or need to manage without electricity and water
  • Get simple tips on how to think in a crisis so that instead of “panic,” a calm action plan emerges

Suitable for young people, families, friends, and work teams – especially if you want to combine teamwork, movement, and a “let’s do it” feeling. Children and pets are also welcome on the trip.

Clean Water Theme Park at Metsamõisa Farm

Discover the Clean Water Theme Park at Metsamõisa Farm – a place where you will learn how pure groundwater is formed and why water is the foundation of life.

Here, you don’t have to experience nature in a hurry or “consume” it. You can visit calmly and safely – the Sensory Garden’s paths with hard surfaces and crushed gravel are suitable for getting around with a wheelchair, walker, walking frame, or cane, and are also comfortable for visitors with strollers.

We offer:

  • Sensory Garden and accessible paths amidst nature
  • Glass kayak and glass SUP – see the underwater world
  • Guided hikes on foot, snowshoes, or bike + water trips
  • MOBO and orienteering, disc golf, and archery trail
  • Workshops on self-sufficiency/crisis preparedness, picnic, and group catering
  • Accommodation in forest cabins

Come with family, friends, or work team – and let nature give you peace, joy, and one good “aha!” moment all at once.

Purekkari Cape and camping area

Purekkari Cape is the northernmost point of mainland Estonia.

The 1.5 km long rocky, boulder-strewn cape is located in Lahemaa National Park. The cape ends with a small island, which is only accessible when the water level is low. The thorny wild rose bushes are particularly eye-catching when in bloom during summer and when they have bright red fruit in autumn. Many migratory birds pass by here, making it a popular birdwatching spot.

Near the cape are former military installations and the Purekkari camping area, which is equipped with a campfire site, shelter, and information boards.

NB! The road to the parking lot is narrow and cannot be accessed by large buses.

Bogshoe hike with traditional Estonian food

During the hike, you will learn about local wildlife, enjoy views from a watchtower, and taste mulgipuder, which is listed on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. The hike usually takes place at Kõnnu Suursoo, located in the Põhja-Kõrvemaa Nature Reserve, but the guide chooses the best location based on the season. The selected bog is 1-1.5 hours’ drive from Tallinn.

The hike is intended for a group of up to 3 people. By prior agreement, private groups of up to 4 people can also join the hike. Larger groups can also participate if transportation is not needed.

A snowshoe hike for nature enthusiasts at Rummu Bog with a guide

Rummu Bog snowshoe hike for nature enthusiasts with a nature guide, some jokes, and many “aha!” moments.

During the hike, we will explore the stages of bog development, learn about bog ecosystems and species interactions, and discuss why the bog is our “silent superhero” — it retains water, maintains biodiversity, and keeps our minds clear. We will move on snowshoes in the bog for about 1.5 km, and the total length of the hike is 4-5 km – a perfect length for families, friends, and work colleagues (team spirit comes surprisingly easily in the bog!).

Wear layers and bring warm gloves and curiosity. Depending on the weather and season, the bog may offer expansive views, a carpet of moss, fresh tracks, or simply luxurious silence.

We follow the Good Practices of Snowshoe Tourism: snowshoe hikes in protected bogs are not permitted from April 23 to June 24. The hike takes place by reservation; the meeting place will be specified upon booking.

The hike is family-friendly and pet-friendly. Book a time, grab a friend, and come to the bog – you’ll leave with a good mood.
